About the Artist
Jaynie has been growing and crafting gourds for eleven years and teaching for six. Her first exposure to gourds and gourd craft was about 14 years ago when she began collecting gourd rattles from different cultures. As an avid gardener, she soon began growing and crafting her own gourds. Although, initially self taught, she has studied with nationally renowned gourd artists. As a crafter of natural fiber pouches and baskets of many years, she now incorporates her basketry & fiber art techniques into her gourd art. She also offers gourd instruments, ornaments, vessels, fiber baskets, pouches, bags and other functional gourd items.
Jaynie has previously taught at Holyoke Creative Arts Center, Smith College, and Hill Institute. Her work has been exhibited Hilltown Artisans Guild Summer, Art Shows and at the Smith College Student Center and the Smith College Art Museum. Jaynie's gourd art is published in "The Gourd Magazine", the official publication of the American Gourd Society and is featured in two recent book publications, "Weaving on Gourds" and "Antlers in Basketry and Gourd Art" by Schiffer Publishing. She currently sells her work at local craft fairs, art shows and festivals. Her work can also be found at Shelburne Arts Co-op, a gallery of fine Arts and Crafts owned and operated by regional artists located in Shelburne Falls, MA. Jaynie is presently offering classes at Greenfield Community College.
Jaynie is a member of the Artisans of Western MA, the Hilltown Artisan Guild, the Shelburne Arts Cooperative, the Center for Native American Awareness, the American Gourd Society, the Pennsylvania Gourd Society and the Northampton Community Gardens for 21 years. She holds a BA in Education, with 25 years experience facilitating/leading groups and workshops. She is passionate about bringing awareness to gourd culture and gourd art to local communities and the New England area.
